Aggressive, climbing prospect for an aggressive, climbing team
Carlos García Pierna turns pro with Equipo Kern Pharma
Equipo Kern Pharma keeps drawing up its roster for the 2020 season. U23 climber Carlos García Pierna will join the Spanish professional cycling team next season from the development team of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA.
For the first time in their careers, Carlos García Pierna (1999, Tres Cantos – Madrid) and his younger brother Raúl will race together, in the same team. Sons to former professional rider Félix García Casas, both developed their talent in the youth squads of Fundación Contador. While Raúl is joining Equipo Kern Pharma from its feeder team, Equipo Lizarte, Carlos comes from a one-year stint at Caja Rural-Seguros RGA’s U23 squad. In that outfit he has confirmed his stage-racing prowess by being 13th in the Giro d’Italia U23.
“What we like of Carlos García Pierna is his style of racing,” says Equipo Kern Pharma’s Team Manager, Juanjo Oroz. “He has a big potential and is really courageous on the bike.”
“He can develop to great heights in our team’s environment. He is that kind of cyclist who can perform better in the pro ranks than he has done as an amateur. We want him to feel at ease in our atmosphere and to grow along with the rest of the team.”
“I really like the set-up of Equipo Kern Pharma,” says Carlos García Pierna. “They have a roster full of quality riders, and that’s cool. But what I fancy the most is their attitude. They race aggressively; they do their best in every event. That really matches my way of being and racing. I love finishing every race I enter with my legs totally empty.”
Carlos García Pierna enjoyed a stagiaire ticket with Caja Rural-Seguros RGA this summer, being able to take part in three Italian, UCI 1.1 races. “I think my abilities suit pro racing quite well. I like long, hard races, with lots of climbing. I’m glad I’ll get to race and learn along great riders. Taking part in races like La Vuelta or the Tour of the Alps is a thrilling prospect for the future.”
