Jumping into the cycling elite
Manolo Azcona and Juanjo Oroz share their thoughts about the first part of the season
After a decent start of 2022, Equipo Kern Pharma ended the first part of the season with two sensational victories, one of them at the Spanish National Championship. Since the 23rd of January, the pharmaceutical team has completed 105 racing days, three WorldTour stage races and a great debut at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
“It means that we are doing things right”, says Manolo Azcona, president of the Asociación Deportiva Galibier. “We would like to keep progressing like this. We are now capable of winning important races, which didn’t seem possible a few months ago, and our next step is to complete a good Vuelta a España”.
The alma mater of the project thinks that, even though Equipo Kern Pharma has faced some difficulties this season, there has been a progress: “The support of our main sponsor, Kern Pharma, has been important and thanks to our ambition we have overcame those difficulties”.
Juanjo Oroz, Equipo Kern Pharma’s general manager and sports director, shares Azcona’s thoughts: “We are proud of our season so far. We jumped into the cycling elite, which demanded the best of every one of us. We went through difficult moments, but we are now reaping the rewards”.
“We began this journey with excitement and, two years later, we are progressing really fast”, explains Oroz. But it hasn’t been an easy road. “If we had been a conformist team, we wouldn’t be where we are right now”, adds.
Equipo Kern Pharma targets now its main goal of the season: La Vuelta a España, that will start the 19th of August from The Netherlands.
From the 4th of July, twelve pre-selected riders will complete a high-altitude training camp in Andorra. As Juanjo Oroz agrees, “the next three weeks are going to help them improve as they will be in good hands.
Equipo Kern Pharma will start confident the second part of the season: “We always end the year showing better performances than when we start it because we keep progressing day after day. Our most important race is Vuelta a España, but we will give our best in all the races we will take part in”.
